Heart rate from Powerbeats Pro 2 on iPhone

Updated

Short answer

Beats says Powerbeats Pro 2 can send heart rate to an iPhone workout app that works with Health. You wear at least one earbud, allow the app to read heart rate and to read and record workouts, then start a workout in it. Beatcast uses the same route as for AirPods Pro 3. The catch: Beats keeps a list of partner apps, and reviewers found that apps expecting a Bluetooth sensor, such as Strava, Zwift and Peloton, failed to pick it up on iPhone.

What works, and what to expect

  • Works, with a catch: live heart rate in an iPhone app that is built for Health, according to Beats. Beatcast uses the same route as for AirPods Pro 3. DC Rainmaker's review (February 2025) saw pairing fail about half the time in Peloton, Zwift, Strava and Wahoo Fitness on iPhone, and launch coverage named seven partner apps. Beats points to a compatible app list at beatsbydre.com/hrm.
  • One earbud: enough, according to Beats. Wearing both may help.
  • Different: Android. Beats describes a route through its own Beats app that needs both earbuds and a manual start. Beatcast has no Android version, so this page stops at the iPhone.
  • Won't work: Beatcast on an iPad. The earbuds route is iPhone only.

What Beats says to do

The Beats support page for third-party apps gives these steps on iPhone: wear at least one earbud and make sure it is connected to your iPhone, use an app that works with Health, give it permission the first time to read heart rate and to read and record workouts, then start a workout in the app. If heart rate shows as dashes or is dimmed, check the fit and the connection and try again.

It also covers exercise equipment, which is a separate path. Connecting to a machine disconnects the earbuds from your iPhone, and you cannot play iPhone audio through them while that runs. This page is about the phone.

What you do in Beatcast

  1. Wear an earbud and check it is connected to your iPhone.
  2. Open the sensor list in Beatcast and pick "AirPods Pro 3 or Powerbeats Pro 2". The row says it goes through the Health app, not Bluetooth.
  3. Read the short explanation and tap Continue.
  4. On the Health sheet, allow reading and saving Heart Rate and Workouts.
  5. Start a session and give it a few seconds for the first reading.

Beatcast asks for this access only when you choose that row. The one thing it reads is live heart rate during a session. Finished sessions go to Health only if you also turn on Save to Apple Health.

If nothing arrives, Beatcast tells you to check that at least one earbud is in your ear and connected, that Heart Rate is on in the earbuds' settings, and that Heart Rate is on under Settings, Privacy & Security, Health, Beatcast.

With an Apple Watch or a strap

Beats says that if you wear an Apple Watch while the earbuds are connected, the most reliable source at that moment is used. If you wear a third-party heart rate monitor such as a chest strap, its data takes priority. So a strap and the earbuds on the same afternoon will not average out. One of them wins.

Which apps

Beats keeps its own list of compatible apps at beatsbydre.com/hrm, and that is the place to check before you rely on a given app. This page does not repeat it, because it changes. An app that asks Health for heart rate and workouts is on the route Apple describes.

Where Beatcast fits

If the reading arrives, Beatcast puts it in a big readout, in zones, and in the session log. A sensor is required, and the earbuds are meant to count as one. Beatcast on the App Store. Fourteen days free, then one purchase.

Questions

Which app should I use with Powerbeats Pro 2?

Check Beats' compatible app list first. Beatcast uses the Health route, with zones and a large readout. For a Lock Screen number see the Lock Screen guide.

Is there a difference from AirPods Pro 3?

On iPhone the route is the same: a workout session and the Health permission. Beats' partner list is the difference to watch. The AirPods Pro 3 page has the Apple side of it.

Do I need an Apple Watch?

No.

Good to know

Beatcast is not a medical device. It is built for training and general wellbeing, and it cannot detect, diagnose, treat or monitor any condition. If something about your heart worries you, talk to a doctor rather than to an app.
