Heart rate sensors that work with an iPhone
Updated
Short answer
An iPhone app can read any sensor that speaks the standard Bluetooth heart rate service. Most straps and arm bands do it out of the box. Most watches need a broadcast mode switched on. AirPods Pro 3 and Powerbeats Pro 2 use a different route through Health, on iPhone only.
Does Beatcast need a subscription? No. You get 14 days with the whole app, then one in-app purchase that does not renew, with no account and no ads. What that means.

The table
Beatcast verified means I tested it myself on a real unit. Works, with a catch means it works and owners report a known issue, described on its page. Works means it uses the standard Bluetooth heart rate service, or for earbuds Apple's heart rate route for workout apps, and I know of no problems.

Where "Check the maker" appears, the maker's own documentation is the place to look. Fitbit Air, Charge 6 and Pixel Watch 2 or newer are listed by Google as intended to be compatible with the Bluetooth Heart Rate Profile.
What won't work
- Apple Watch, as the sensor. No Apple broadcast mode is documented. Beatcast on the watch can show the heart rate from your strap or arm band.
- Smart rings, including Oura. Oura does not state that the ring broadcasts heart rate to other apps.
- Older Garmin devices that send ANT+ only. Strava's support pages say ANT+ sensors are not supported directly on iPhone. An ANT+-to-Bluetooth bridge can get around that, see the ANT+ page.
- Suunto watches before the April 2026 firmware. The Suunto 9 Peak Pro and the original Vertical are not covered. The Race 2, Vertical 2, Race and Race S work once the heart rate broadcast setting is on, which they gained that month. A Suunto chest strap works too.
How to read this table
If a device broadcasts the standard Bluetooth heart rate service, Beatcast reads it. There is no per-brand code and no allow-list. So the question is never whether Beatcast supports your device. It is whether your device broadcasts, and which setting makes it.
Wear it wherever it reads. The position makes no difference to the app.
Where to start
- Which watches broadcast: the watch table.
- Buying a strap: what matters.
- A strap that only mentions ANT+: what an iPhone can read.
- New strap in hand: how to connect a Bluetooth heart rate monitor.
- No Apple Watch: the three routes.
- Not showing up: the checklist.
- More than one receiver: connections, model by model.
- Calories from heart rate: the calculator and the equation.

Good to know
Beatcast is not a medical device. It is built for training and general wellbeing, and it cannot detect, diagnose, treat or monitor any condition. If something about your heart worries you, talk to a doctor rather than to an app.
