Wahoo TICKR and TRACKR with an iPhone

Updated

Short answer

Wahoo's heart rate monitors send the standard Bluetooth heart rate signal, so an iPhone app that reads a generic Bluetooth sensor can use them. Once the monitor is paired and updated, the Wahoo app isn't required for a live number. The ANT+ side does nothing on an iPhone. Wear it, open the app, pick it from the list.

What works, and what to expect

  • Works: the TICKR and TICKR X chest straps, the TRACKR chest strap and the TICKR FIT arm band, over Bluetooth.
  • Won't work: ANT+ on an iPhone.
  • Depends: how many things can listen. Wahoo says the TRACKR takes up to three Bluetooth connections. For the TICKR FIT, Wahoo's page says one in two places and up to three in a third. Wahoo's support article gives three for the current TICKR and TICKR X and recommends one where possible.

The two devices guide says more about why Wahoo advises fewer.

Pair it in the app, not in Settings

Wahoo's troubleshooting advice is to pair through the app only. If a TICKR was paired in iOS Bluetooth settings, unpair it there completely and try again in the app. That matches how Beatcast works. It connects without bonding, so the sensor appears in its own list once Bluetooth is allowed.

Wahoo also says new TICKRs want a firmware update, and to use a name-brand coin cell. Both are done through the Wahoo app. After that you can leave it closed.

When it drops

If the link drops, clean the electrodes and the sensor, check the battery, and close the Wahoo app and anything else that might hold a slot.

The not connecting checklist takes these in order.

What Beatcast does with it

The number goes into the Dynamic Island and onto the Lock Screen while a session runs, and it stays there while you are in another app. Zones colour the readout. Sessions are kept with time in zone and exported as CSV or TCX.

Questions

Do I need the Wahoo app?

Wahoo says to pair and update through its app. After that, not for a live number. Use it for firmware and settings.

Does the TICKR work with an iPhone?

Yes, over Bluetooth, in any app that reads the standard heart rate service.

Can the TRACKR feed Beatcast and a bike computer together?

Wahoo says it takes up to three Bluetooth connections, so yes in principle.

How does it compare with the H10?

Both speak the same service. See the Polar H10 page.

Good to know

Beatcast is not a medical device. It is built for training and general wellbeing, and it cannot detect, diagnose, treat or monitor any condition. If something about your heart worries you, talk to a doctor rather than to an app.
